Romania in June: Storks, Castles & the Unexpected Joy of Polenta.

I didn’t know my heart had a Romanian-shaped corner in it… until this trip.

In June 2025, my travel crew and I set off on an adventure through Romania, and what we found was a kaleidoscope of charm, history, humor, and enough breathtaking scenery to permanently raise our standards for what qualifies as “a nice view.”

We began in Timișoara, where vibrant buildings and a relaxed energy made it the perfect place to ease into the journey. Then on to Sibiu, which felt like a storybook town—if fairy tales had cobblestone streets and excellent espresso.

We made a very important detour to the village of Cristian, because apparently, Romania has VIP storks. Their nests are literal landmarks. And yes, we stopped and stared like groupies.

Cluj-Napoca buzzed with life and creativity, Sighișoara transported us back in time (with better food), and Bran Castle was every bit as dramatic as Dracula’s press agent would want it to be. But the Bucegi Mountains? Absolutely unreal. It felt like nature was showing off just for us.

Then came Breb—tiny, soulful, and unforgettable. We stayed at Pensiunea Marioara, where the hospitality was warmer than the June sun. I’m convinced they put kindness in the water.

And let me tell you about our guide: Diana was the secret ingredient of the whole experience. Romania is her home, and her pride in every stop, dish, and detail made the trip feel deeply personal and incredibly special.

As for the food? Let’s just say I now have strong, loyal feelings about sarmale, and if you haven’t eaten polenta with a mountain view, you haven’t really lived.

The people? Incredibly warm and welcoming. I lost count of how many strangers smiled, waved, or helped us.

Romania, you were full of surprises—ancient fortresses, soul-stirring landscapes, great wine, and even greater people. I came for the castles and left in love with the villages, the vibe, and yes... even the storks.

If you’re even thinking about visiting: go. Pack stretchy pants, a good camera, and maybe—just maybe—leave a little space in your heart for Romania.

I met Diana on a public tour in 2019. She was great then, so when I wanted to set up a private tour of Romania for my friends and family, Diana was the obvious choice.

Diana listened to what I wanted for my group and gave us everything I asked for and much MORE! She gave us free time every evening and made sure our hotels were near pedestrian areas so we could walk to outdoor cafes to eat and unwind. The activities during the day were fun and the scenery was beautiful. I know Diana put in many hours of hands-on research to make sure every detail was perfect. This was not your cookie cutter tour, this was personalized to our group, and that’s the advantage of having Diana set up a private tour for your group, you get exactly what YOU want, not what a tour company already has contracted.

We will be having all our upcoming European tours through Diana at Horizon Hues!!! She can make your dream vacation a reality!!!

The lunch with a farming family in Sibiel is my favourite travel memory, anywhere. Nothing about it felt staged. Diana handled every detail so quietly that I only noticed afterwards how much had been taken care of.
